Roland Rat, Margaret Thatcher; Rubik's Cubes, the Royal Wedding; aerobics, skinheads... It's 1983, and the schools are breaking up for summer. Shaun is 12 and a bit of a loner, growing up with his mum in a grim coastal town, his dad killed fighting in the Falklands War. On his way home from school where he's been tormented all day for wearing flares, he runs into a group of skinheads, who against expectations turn out to be friendly and take him under their wing. Soon Shaun discovers parties, girls and snappy dressing, and finds some role models in Woody, Milky and the rest of the gang. But when an older, overtly racist skinhead returns home from prison, the easy camaraderie of the group is broken, and Shaun is drawn into much more uncomfortable territory. Based largely on his own experience as a youngster, this is Shane Meadows' most mature and fully realised film. Handling the complexities of masculinity, violence and race with sensitivity and a lightness of touch, it's hard to imagine a film that would better capture the mood of the time, or that could have any greater an understanding of the allure of being part of a gang.

I normally do not bother to inflict my opinion to the other through this database. However, I felt compelled to reiterate all the positive feedback and comments I've seen here and elsewhere to this movie: This Is England really wonderful. I was fortunate to be given a free ticket to see the BFI Film Festival on Tuesday. A wonderful woman (now known as Lily) collared me in the queue for tickets and generously offered me a spare. We sat down and I knew things were looking good when the cast was introduced, but avoided the usual Q & A session before introducing them and asks us to just enjoy the This Is England Drama movie and added that if anyone has any questions at the end that could be milling around for a chat. Anyway, enough preamble, the This Is England Drama - is an exemplary piece of work that beautifully sums up the feelings of the eighties. The greed of the age (both political and economic) juxtaposed against the greater sense of revolts against a Thatcher government that does not really seem to give a shot on any person who was not on the gravy train. The script is razor sharp and excellent! I will not waste their time reviewing, but I will say, please go and see for himself (especially if grown in the eighties) ... He was rewarded with an excellent soundtrack, laughter, sadness, and sometimes real, palpable tension. Love and rockets, Lord E.

The sections of this DivX film This Is England is incredibly hard to see. And why it is so accurate. The kind of game should fight the skinheads have been known as a child and the right on the mark. All players are in this amazing. The costumes are spot around the world expected authentic eighties. Shaun is like so many guys that I know and I can totally relate to it (although I was a 2-tone tough kid myself, no skinheads) who struggle to see certain parts, because it is so close to reality. I knew that people like this, I grew up with people like this. I lived on a farm like this, I went to school with people like this. It's not just about right, it's correct. Watch this and love it.

The man oh man, I have not been blown away by a This Is England Drama since American History X. I will not go into the detail of that, really advise you to see this movie. It is difficult to grasp and hitting, from the beginning. Superb performances from relatively unknown actors. He did so with Dead Man's Shoes, which has been and has done it again. Hollywood producers, take note. You do not need the best teams of special effects, or "glamorous" actors. Meadows does see his work without effort, however, at the same time, it is great, because of its simplicity. I did not grow much in the 80's, 90's was when I really grew so can not comment on the accuracy of the times. I am a British / Pakistani and was not offended a bit alone, and there are a lot of violence and racism, but nothing that is not expected if we do not close your mind. This is a brilliant British film, and I am sure that Meadows now finally get the credit it deserves. Shane Meadows, we go forward. Take a bow.
