In 1840, there's work on the Florida Keys for honest salvagers (like the Claibornes) and outright pirates like King Cutler, who bribes sailors to cause wrecks. When Capt. Stuart's ship is wrecked, Loxi Claiborne rescues him, falls for him, and travels to Charleston to convince the owners the wreck wasn't his fault; company lawyer Steve Tolliver returns with them to Key West to investigate. Tolliver and Stuart's rivalry for Loxi's hand complicates their swashbuckling adventures in pursuit of Cutler, ending in a trial and a dangerous dive for evidence.

In "Reap the Wild Wind" we have a chance to see Paulette Goddard, a pioneer for the role of Scarlett O'Hara to Vivien Leigh appeared, sporting a southern accent and enjoy herself as a Southern Belle Feisty heroin. Unfortunately, their share is not nearly as complex as the role that is almost epic in the Selznick. It's an adventure lusty period of about two struggling ship salvagers competing for a strong Georgian girl. The outstanding balance of the special effects steal the movie, like the lavish sets and costumes of a bygone era. Susan Hayward have been used in a minor role as Paulette's cousin regrettable. Both are heavily burdened by Southern accents and functions that are paper thin giving them little else to do it on the steering wheel around Frilly dresses and bonnets, while men - Ray Milland, John Wayne and Robert Preston - lead the brunt of the action full of romance. An impressive climax involves an underwater battle with a giant squid. Understandably, who won an Oscar for Best Special Effects. Beautifully photographed in Technicolor, which has given the lavish Cecil B. DeMille treatment and makes a fool if entertaining epic romance that shows its pulp origins.

DeMille movies often contain absurd dialogue and uneven performances, and this is no exception. However, as entertainment, it is hard to beat. The director of the attention to detail, and commercialization of the characters in interesting situations that show us what it was like living in that place and time, informs us as the plot develops. We learn about the trade of rescue during the time before the Civil War, and on shipping in general. DeMille and peppers the story with witty stocks and shares. The special effects are good - especially the models of boats. Even the squid is good (considering the year this was filmed.) The color is beautiful, the music fits the mood, and the actors are fun to watch. One interesting note is that you can get an idea of what this Reap the Wild Wind Adventure film "Gone with the Wind" has been taken as Paulette Goddard (first runner for the role of Scarlett before Vivien Leigh came along) have been issued. However, an excellent way to spend 2 hours in front of a TV.
