A realistic fantasy that uses the circumstances to say something like an inspiration from fairy tale. The father-daughter relationship and presence of contemporary supermarket adds an element of believability essentially what could have been a fairy tale. So while the DVD movie King of California forces you to make many leaps of faith to fully appreciate the history, is realistic in that part of history where lies the charm. And acted wonderfully well built, history provides many tender moments before culminating in a final that is both amazing and inspiring. One of those movies that you can see, enjoy and forget and then, of course, to look back to discover something new. |
Make no mistake about it. Evan Rachael Wood is fast becoming a most welcome addition to the growing wave of young stars in movies today. I totally admire his work in 'Thirteen' (2003), and "Running With Scissors" (2006). In this, who plays the daughter of a recently released mental patient (Michael Douglas, sporting an unkempt beard), who is obsessed over treasure buried somewhere in the suburbs of California. Michael Douglas makes his performance as Charles working very well, acting like a madman who was released from the house a little too soon, in contrast to anchor the timber that holds things together. The script contains some bumps in the road, but not enough to make this worthwhile to avoid. |
It is too easy to expect a rug-chewing performance from Michael Douglas as a crazy person, and an exasperated, eye-rolling in two dimensions, "oh I'm so loose on the world" work of Evan Rachel Wood. Fortunately, the clichés were avoided in this touching and ultimately uplifting and cheerful (thank God!) History of the nobility quiet, personal vision and purpose, and love and strength among otherwise "broken" people. It is refreshing to enter a theater not expecting much and leaves illuminated by the combination of vision of the actors, writer, director and cinematographer. Bravo to all involved, and I hope to see a strong presence at the Academy Awards. |
