| Do not expect great things that happen in this movie or the plot to make sense. But if you want to sit back and enjoy a silly 18th century to break through beautiful Venice, and then cassanova hit the right spot. Heath Ledger is a hero pleasant in a puppyish, Golden Retriever kind of way, and Sienna Miller is beautiful, but forgettable. The real stars are Oliver Platt and Jeremy Irons. Without their contributions witty, this film would disappear from memory faster than a Chinese meal. Its value is acting the cost of its two hours of viewing. This film, in fact, reminds me of the swashbuckling, romantic adventure Flix so popular in the 30s, 40, and 50, when the studies churned out a movie of the week for viewer consumption. Think Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, and you will have a very good idea about the quality of this movie: Entertaining, but not good enough to make the list. |
| I just saw Casanova. I have read most of the reviews here before I went to see and honestly I was on my way to relinquish it. I had fun. I laughed and enjoyed. One thing well: it is a comedy. If you're on a quest or historical, accurate description of the famous Casanova, then they're on the wrong track. Some people here said Jeremy Irons was ... more action? Come on .. give him the credit he deserves as a great player he is. He was enjoying his role. I could almost see him laughing on the set after the director yells out Cut! The only dramatic moment near the end of the film seemed to be there just to reinforce the comedy image after him. Sienna Miller seems a bit difficult for me in the beginning with a speech at the University .. I loved the costumes and settings. Definitely makes you think of buying a ticket to Venice. (Again!) Sensual? 10% love story? 40% comedy? The rest. So I say, if you're in the mood for something light, and give him a chance to laugh:) And we agree to disagree, OK? |
| I always thought it would be a good idea to make a comedy about young Casanova - his incredible adventures, love stories, his struggle with the church. Casanova was a fascinating historical figure, a soldier, spy, diplomat, writer, adventurer, which will also be remembered as the most seductive mistress of the world and had never seen (though only from his own words). His life and mystery surrounding him has made him a hero to many past novels, plays and films. Unfortunately, not all movies are good and Casanova by Lasse Hallström comedy belongs to the long list of hit movies do not. Of course, is beautiful to watch - is 18th Century Venice after all, and places, photography, music of Vivaldi, costumes, wigs, make up are first class, but beyond all this is just another typical Chick Flick or romcom with Heath Ledger, whose Casanova is not brilliant and fascinating figure, but just a nice guy - neither more nor less. |
