There are some movies that bomb, they really are much better than the criticism makes you think, but there are others who deserve every bit of negative criticism they received. This is one of those films. It has some amusing moments, like when Jackie Chan tries to cling to the hot-air balloon, as the distance flown, but those moments are few and far between. Chan has said time and again in interviews that he wishes that could be cast in different roles from the usual action and martial arts heroes who usually plays. Unfortunately, Chan has not yet mastered the English vocabulary. It seems to struggle with every line of dialogue that pronounced in this film. The role requires him to be an action hero, but also requires more "acting" that he used to. Chan, stick with their daily work. I'm not too familiar with Steve Coogan, but I've seen in interviews on "Conan O'Brien", and seems a very funny. Unfortunately, none of his comic skills are put to good use in this movie lame brain. Frankly, I had fun at some of the cameos. The cameo Arnold Schwarzenegger was certainly fun to watch. Other celebrity appearances, as Luke and Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates and Rob Schneider. Normally, I do not like giving away cameo appearances, but no one doubts this reading is rushing to see this movie anyway. "Around the World in 80 Days" adds to the huge pile of garbage that Disney has produced in recent years, living in the category of action. |
I have been impressed by the recent remakes of Disney (Annie, and Music Man), but this is pathetic - I suggest you save your money and rent David Niven in the original version. At least Niven can act. Steve Coogan could have easily been replaced by a brick and no loss in the ability to act. A pretty face and a nice smile does not make you an actor. Jackie Chan is stereotypical, and scenes of the fighting became Ho-hum. There's nothing really new or capricious about the scenes, and slapstick attempts fell flat. Cecil de France did attempt to act and tried to make the movie interesting, but could not overcome the inefficient performance of Chan and Coogan. I hope you come into a better movie in the near future. The only fun part was Rob Schneider in San Francisco, in moments that are reminiscent of Michael Keaton as Jeuse Beetle. I hope Shwarzennagger Arnold (No, I can not explain) can do a better job of saving that California did in saving this movie - because he did not. Andy Smith |
This film is a very funny take on Jules Verne's novel. The story and characters are radically different from the originals, but there is a purpose for every detail in this film. Phileas Fogg is a representation of Jules Verne himself, someone who sees the future. Steve Coogan performs marvelously in showing the vulnerability of a man who bet everything. He makes the character lovable and funny. Jackie Chan brings to the table its classic fight choreography and humor, as well as branches in the types of comedy that had not worked before. Cécile De France is the most charming face in the film and brings an amazing spirit of its function. Jim Broadbent and Ewen Bremner provide some of the biggest laughs. Also notable is the choreography of color for each country. England is gray and sad, devoid of color. France is full of light pastels. Turkey has been in strong colors of gold, blue, white and bright. India is full of deep brown, orange and green. China offers a lush, green background of natural and warm, welcoming earth tones and dark blue. Everything is designed to take the audience on a journey around the world. The end result is a beautiful film that is suitable for all ages and provides that wonderful feeling good and feeling that only they can provide the greatest adventures. |
This movie should have been sent around the bowl in 80 nano seconds. I know this was a movie from Disney, and more importantly, a film of children, but Disney should know better. We could have done much better than this. This movie was so forced that they could not be more contrived a way to achieve this silly argument that the whole world to escape with a Chinese artifact. If I was new to this country or this planet, even I may have been wrong for this movie a comedy adventure. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, I've been here long enough to recognize what should and should not be classified as a comedy adventure. Around the World in 80 Days ... um ... no. |
