A science-fiction film that proves to be less disappointing than expected is the adaptation of losing Robert A. Heinlein 's novel. Donald (give me another party to a case of a foreign film), Sutherland plays the role of Adam "Old" Nivens, the head of a secret government protection agency that has its hands full trying to stop an alien invasion by mental slug-like parasites to tap the brains of the people, controlling them toward their own ends. Eric Thal (from an unknown BETWEEN U.S.) drew a blank for a strong character should be the role of Sam, son of the elderly, and fellow agent. Julie Warner (DOC Hollywood) fares slightly better as Mary, a xenobiologist along NASA for the rollercoaster journey. The opening scenes do justice to the setting and atmosphere of the book, and the skeleton of the original fabric is unpredictable and exciting, but finally, the commitments in adapting to give rise to the style of Hollywood science fiction conventions such as alien hives. Several realistic, key elements are thrown out, along with almost all the heavy dialogue that made the book a success. However, the special effects are convincing, and the cinematography and editing are simplified and tightened. Far from being definitive, this version of history, however, is sufficiently satisfying and worth a look. |
This was a decent movie. The book was much better. If the book was made into a three-hour movie, it would have been excellent. They have had time to do things right. As it is, that a wide-ranging pact story set in the future in an action movie in dodgy today. Ask yourself a favor - read the book. Donald Sutherland is too cool, though. |
An interesting adaptation of Robert Heinlein from the original story about aliens who come to Earth and take charge of a small city such as control of parasites from their host bodies. This film was made in 1994 and it seems to me a pleasant watch. It is true that it is very different from the source material. Heinlein's book is a very different as are most book to movie adaptations. But I found it interesting without being dominant. I liked the leads in this movie and Donald Sutheland chews the scenery as the leader of an agency that seems, but not too mentioned ET go hunting occasionally. He's a great actor, and added to the film, so it's just that much more enjoyable. There are other films that deal with the same type of material, most notabely the film "The Faculty", which has exactly the same idea with little parasites linked to people, but this movie is well on its own in spite of this and I'm sure you find your own little niche of fans. |
I strongly disagree with many of the other reviews of this movie. It is a very faithful adaptation (given the history of Hollywood to adapt for the screen), and one of my favorite movies. It is not entirely true, that is, Operation hair (which I would have enjoyed) was abandoned, probably because of the nudity that would result in mass. The love interest, the story and the characters were very close to the novel. Some critics as a Ripoff of the invasion of the Body Snatchers, but in reality the novel predates this work, so copied whom? The scope of the film was cut and little mention was made of landings and conflicts in other countries, but this may be due to the demands of editing. Foreigners are appropriately creepy as my wife would agree, since it still refuses to see again, and without that manages the blood of many similar films, but is rather violent. Compared with other recent adaptation of Heinlein, Starship troopers, this movie is much more true to the author of the original work and is an exciting and thoughtful address. Unfortunately, it appears that it will not be forthcoming sequel to take the battle to the moons of Saturn. |
Problem # 1: The main problem with this film is its script ridiculous. The movie can not decide if he wants to be a mindless action movie or a character-driven Sci-fi drama. So what you get is a story of alien invasion, where all customers get "infected" by aliens, but somehow were saved by their friends while dozens of extras get infected cut by machine-gun fire. If a main character is infected, their friends come with all sorts of ways to peel off Critter abroad, but if the farmer Joe comes running towards them with a wrench GUL, nobody doubts that the bomb is full of holes. Problem # 2: Richard Belzer is in this film and given not a single funny line! SPOILER: When your character ICES, I felt like it was Richard Belzer of the way of saying, "This movie sucks, I'm here." Problem # 3: The final cliché helicopter action sequence. It seemed to be filmed for another movie or something and that the only label on the bottom of this. |
