Regina Lambert returns to Paris from a ski holiday in Switzerland to find that her husband has been murdered. She is later told by CIA agent Hamilton Bartholemew that Charles Lambert was one of five men who stole $250,000 in gold from the U.S. government during World War II, and the government wants it back. The money was not found among his possessions, and Regina can shed no light on its whereabouts. Later that day she is visited by Peter Joshua, whom she had met briefly while on holiday. When her husband's former partners in crime, who were double-crossed by Charles, start calling her looking for the money, Peter offers to help find it. Thus begins an elaborate charade in which nothing is what it seems to be.

Charade is the best Hitchcock film Hitchcock never! With romance, comedy sophisticated, stylish and suspense (including a graphic Insights-by-your-era violence) deftly balanced out, Charade is the film that made me a fan of Peter Stone and Stanley Donen (yes, I really I saw this before I ever saw one of the musical Donen). Each line is another sparklingly quotable, and Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are some of my favorite screen couples; shame this was his only big-screen team (I liked the way that ironically kidded the age difference between them, too) . James Coburn, George Kennedy, and Walter Matthau (Oscar winners all now!) Are in top form in these early screen appearances of theirs. Both Hepburn and Paris to watch their sophisticated best, and the theme is my favorite of Henry Mancini next to the Pink Panther theme. I think this is now on DVD and VHS, so they have no excuse not to check it out! (Encore cable movie channel also has a magnificent impression of this.)

Terrific movie that can be perceived as a first rate piece of entertainment directly, and as a meditation on the thin line between truth and lies. Witty script, dialogue full of fun interaction, a great chemistry between the two charismatic stars, lively and quick for the direction of Stanley Donen. Not quite in the league of "North by Northwest", but remains a very entertaining and recommendable picture. (***)

I will be brief. This romantic comedy thriller is a hybrid absolute treat. With the kind of players in both Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn and directed with continental style and flare for the incomparable Stanley Donen, the film is not to be missed. Photography (especially notable in the new DVD version), Henry Macini punctuation, teaches the script and crisp, the perfect supporting cast all add up to make a perfect piece of entertainment. I agree with many of the other writers IMDB, is criminal that this movie is not respected more. This is a plan of what makes a movie entertaining. A perfect 10 of 10.
