| When I saw the first preview I was terrified that Tim Burton had really muck it. I must admit that my fears were unjustified. This is definitely the best film Burton has directed. His leadership and Johnny Depp's performance make this film adaptation of Sondheim's masterpiece stage success beyond all expectation. There are a few of the major film critics who have thoroughly embraced this film. I'm so glad you are getting their deserved praise. I saw the first step on Broadway before the Tony won all the prizes. I know this piece very well. The changes and deletions from the stage version are reasonable and enhance the success of the transfer to film. Stage adaptations to the movies are the most difficult of all. It is amazing how many stage works are making the process of filming. It is proof that imagination and intelligence are not completely dead in the film world. Despite the fact that he knew exactly what was coming, I was not prepared for the swath of blood and pathos in the final. It was powerful and moving. Depp deserves credit for keeping this compelling from beginning to end bloody. He definitely get my vote! |
| Contrary to the many comments I've read and heard about the film so far, I thought it was absolutely wonderful. After what some might term a "drought" of Tim Burton, who is a breath of fresh air to see this new offering, Sweeney Todd. The film showed Tim return to its roots of darkness, the sinister and macabre. All were mixed together in the establishment is well known for, the darkness of the streets of London. Besides, I thought that the fact remains that the musical aspect of the movie / game worked in favor of the film. I know that Johnny Depp has said that can not sing, but sings quite well if you ask me. Keep the cockney accent, whether singing or not, he made the film much better. Although I was surprised to see Danny Elfman is not included in this movie, I think the music was performed and carried out perfectly, however. In fact, the accents can sometimes make it hard to discern what is being said, but that's not always a bad thing, considering the circumstances. In the event that suddenly does not speak or sing with his cockney tones, it can provide a problem of consistency. Overall, I loved the movie and have no complaints. A very refreshing return to the realms and topics that Tim Burton is so surprising in the capture. Top notch! |
| Having never been a big fan of Tim Burton works in the past with the exception of Ed Wood and BIG FISH. I found his work usually empty of what makes a movie interesting for me. They are always full of style, but completely void of anything resembling substance. Needless to say I was very skeptical of his taking Sweeney Todd to the big screen.Glad to say how I was wrong. The film is superb in all departments. Production Design, Costume Design, Photography, all the marks of blows to its terrible beauty. As for people saying that the singing voices were weak, have no clue as to the notion of the brilliant lyrics and music by Stephan Sondheim.The score was always to be recited / sung add to the darkness of story.Any other way it would have been just silly. As for Johnny Depp, has never been better. For an actor to play a role of a serial murderer and manage for the public to understand and feel your pain is worthy of admiration. His spirit has been destroyed, his revenge is justified.There seems, however, one last final betrayal that makes what has preceded even the most tragic. A truly great achievement for all. |
| I was hoping Tim Burton is improving after his latest film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" I was impressed. It is a big improvement over his previous films, "Planet of the Apes" and "Sleepy Hollow." But Burton goes back to his old form in "Sweeney Todd." It's the same problem I had with previous Burton films, there is too much attention on the art of leadership and not enough on the characters. Johnny Depp is a great actor, but is useless in the present and boring. He is not funny and eccentric as he is in "Charlie". The songs almost all fall flat, too. None of them stand out in particular, they all sound like generic Broadway tunes, it is sometimes difficult to tell one song in the film of the last. The art direction is good. It's sad, as only Tim Burton does. But it is not worth watching for the characters dull and lifeless plot. None of these actors in Hollywood are very good singers well. |
