| Anthology film rarely work for me. Most of them are so uneven as twenty miles of bad road. TRAPPES DOG was another bumpy ride. Six people are trapped in a room and should refer terrible things that had to happen to them in their host (Henry Gibson). What follows are four segments directed by authors not necessarily known for his horror chops (with the possible exception of Sean S. Cunningham). Each segment highlighted the characteristics of the links between sex and death so prevalent in horror movies. One of the characteristics of a woman whose breasts vampiric lamprey mouth nipples sucks the blood of their lovers. Another woman falls from a corpse that whisks her off to hell, while in Japan on vacation. A Succubus falls from Stanley Kubrick. And finally, poor woman shares the insatiable hunger of his twin brother, a tapeworm. The first segment is created expectations that TRAPPES DOG will be much more a slight film. Surprisingly, this segment was directed by Ken Russell, but it felt like something from Joe Dante and Paul Bartel (especially recalls Irvin Kershner of "Hell toupee" episode of "Amazing Stories"). The Sean S. Cunningham sequence felt like a bucket Gaijin aping of Hideo Nakata (THE RING) and John Gaeta simply do not work at all. I enjoyed the little Kubrick, courtesy of Monte Hellman - a perennial Cashiers du Cinemart FAVE - except that the element of horror seemed for a moment. Surprisingly, this is not called TALES FROM THE CRYPT: TRAPPES ashes, this is one that can be missed by all except Die Hard John Saxon fans. |
